Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

5.0

⠀⠀⠀⠀ ↠ | four and three-fourths stars

⠀⠀hello, this is now one of my all time favorite books. i adored everything about this. as an antisocial child of the internet who has been heavily involved in fandoms for nearly a decade (gross), this hit home in every single way. i identified so strongly with eliza it's not even funny.

⠀⠀the characters in this were very lovable and relatable. as previously stated, i felt like i was in eliza's shoes. i wanted and adored wallace, too. even the side characters were so fun (i'm looking at you, church and sully).

⠀⠀the problems were real and handled well--including the topics of mental health. the author describes both the plot events and mental health issues in a way that is easy to understand--a way that is easy for you to imagine how the characters are feeling.

⠀⠀I loved the elements in this (ie. the chat room messages, emails, drawings, wallace's writings, etc.). they all added to the story in a way that words and traditional writing wouldn't have. the writing itself was extremely easy to follow. I remember reading nearly 100 pages and was surprised to find out that it didn't take me three minutes. you really get lost in the story.

⠀⠀the novel did lose 1/4 of a star, though. this is mainly because I thought the main conflict wrapped up incredibly easy. while eliza still dealt with the repercusions of the event for the remainder of the book, I found that her relationship with wallace repaired too quickly when he was acting like she slaughtered his entire family without telling him. along with that, it felt like the ending came too fast (but this is coming from someone who would've read 1000 pages of nonsense).

⠀⠀at the end of the day, this will be something that sticks with me for a very long time. I loved every minute of this and wanted to savor it. I'm kind of glad that my real life events (although very sad and not fun) allowed me to consume this over an extended period of time. I think I appreciated it more than if I would have devoured it in two sittings.
