Dreamers by Yuyi Morales

This book is a beautifully illustrated story about a mother and her son who immigrated to the US from Mexico and found their home and their voice in the public libraries of the San Francisco area. The art is gorgeous and the occasional use of words in Spanish makes the story more lyrical. I really loved the fuller story written by the author at the end of the book. That just wasn’t captured well in the picture book part that little kids will sit through.

This book is on the banned and challenged list for no decent reason other than racism and xenophobia. Having empathy for immigrants is not dangerous to school children.
