Financial Feminist: Overcome the Patriarchy's Bullsh*t to Master Your Money and Build a Life You Love by Tori Dunlap

3.0

I appreciated that this book felt accessible and really broke down some financial concepts I’ve had a hard time fully grasping, never having really been taught much about money. I appreciated some of the practical advice. And I thought the chapter on emotions and money was fantastic, and offered some really excellent ways to take a bigger picture look at how we spend money and why.

That said, my biggest critique is the author often shares that she is a “financial expert” without ever really establishing her credentials. Her educational background she shares is in marketing, her work experience in the same area. She talks about how her parents raised her with a good understanding of money and saving. But she never really shares how she developed into a financial expert. The subtext seems to be that she is self-taught and has experienced personal success and business success. This can definitely count towards expertise, but a bit more transparency about where her knowledge and her expertise comes from would help me to trust her more. That said, I was listening to an audiobook, so there’s a chance I just missed it. There was also at least one reference that seems to be outdated: she mentions a resource called Treasury that provides education about investing but I don’t see a resource with that name on her site. Maybe the name has just changed.

There were some practical suggestions I will be implementing, however!
