The Emerald Atlas by John Stephens

4.0

This is a book that you read for the plot. The characters themselves are nice enough, but they're all pretty straightforward archtypes without much to distinguish them. Normally this would be a big fat negative, but somehow Stephens makes it work and work well. I also feel like I should be complaining about the writing style since Stephens does everything you're not supposed to do in creative writing (telling, rather than showing, in particular happens a lot) but again, somehow it works. Kudos to Stephens for breaking all the rules and still crafting a story that sucked me in.

Overall, it's an appealing fantasy that should please fans of the genre. I'll pick up the next book in this trilogy.
