Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup

5.0

I need to lie down, seriously. [5 stars]

Honestly, I am finding it hard to believe that the human-race which includes you and I, regardless of any differences, once treated people belonging to a certain race and skin-color with such brutality, devoid of the basic human decency. All I can say is that Bass, you were a man of valor, and I hope your soul rests in the beautiful heavens. I am not a believer of God, but I have to say that. It is people like him that made me restore faith in humanity, which is fucked up to an unimaginable extent. The fact that this book was told from the point of view of a person who went through every-thing stated in it made it a thousand times more impactful. This is not what a single person, but millions went through. And this reflects another truth, that of how discrimination and racisms prevails even today, the 21st century. The events that took place recently are more than enough to prove that, I assume. Slavery is long abolished, but mistreatment of people of color prevails till day, and it saddens me. Nevertheless, we have came a long way, and I believe tomorrow would be a bit better for anyone who is treated unfairly.

Highly recommended! This book flourishes with honesty and the fact that nothing was over-exaggerated made everything so much better.
