Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

4.75

The author and I grew up in different places, something I learned in his memoir, Beautiful Struggle.  This letter to his son spoke to me as a fellow parent, although the things he shared are quite different from those I would share with my daughters.

We parents want to keep our children safe, physically, emotionally, and educationally equipped to bound mostly unafraid into our world.  What he shares with his son feels like a wonderfully honest, deeply vulnerable treatise on what it takes to grow up as a black man today.

I can't claim to fully understand how that feels.  But hearing it helps me better understand the work we all have ahead of us.
