Ariadne by Jennifer Saint
5.0
This book was PERFECT 5/5 star.
If you loved “Circe” as I did, and if you love Greek myth – feminist books then this should be the next one on your list.
Ariandne was the story of “Theseus” and “Minotour”. The Minotour was a big half-man, half-bull creature that lived in labyrinth which was created by a genius inventor Daedalus, a father of Icarus. And I thought that the story is going to be a story of Theseus and Minotour told from perspective of Ariadne. And yes, that how it started but all that ended in (Part I) of the book and I was surprised by that.
Another element that I loved in this book was that in (Part I) of the story the book begins with quite fun stories that set up the feminist themes of this book and it continue from there. A heartbreaking retelling stories that focuses on strength of females and the after effects of actions of male for the female. The book caught my heart and made me just emphasized with each and every female in this book.
“I would be Medusa, if it comes to it, I resolved. If gods held me accountable one day for the sins of someone else, if they come for me to punish a man’s actions, I would not hide away like Pasiphae. I would wear that coronet of snakes, and the world would shrink from me instead.”
We also get some of Phaedra’s stories in part II, III, IV and I was very thankful for that. The love between the two sister was beautiful and realistic. The world was rich and vibrant. And the book was focused with bunch of different Greek myths and legends. We get a lot of heroes and gods and monsters all featuring prominently in this book such as (Medea, Medusa, Daedalus and Icarus, Artemis and the young Amazonian boy…) but the main focus God in this book was “Dionysus” and I really loved Dionysus.
