The Kingdom of Copper by S.A. Chakraborty

4.0

I'm always dubious about sequels. No matter how much I loved book1, I'm always hesitant to read book2 becasue they always seem like a letdown. But Kingdom of Copper was just as good as City of Brass.
The plot is well-paced and the characters feel like they've developed from book 1. The setting is still magical yet horrifying, with everyone thinking up new and terible ways to physically and emotionally hurt each other. The relationship dynamics are very interesting - fathers and sons, soldiers and commanders, husbands and wives, followers and heroes. They're written in a realistic and nuanced way which means many of the characters we follow are a grey area of right and wrong and you're never really sure who to root for.
I loved the twists and turns of the plot, and it's a book full of magic and horror and heartbreak and family and adventure! The one issue I have is that, after two whole books, I still can't figure out the names of the tribes and how they relate to each other. but that doesn't stop me enjoying the books, and I just sort of let the names like ifrit and daeva wash over me while I enjoy this wonderful fantasy series.
A really excellent book and a worthy follow-up.
