Tw: stalking

Some spoilers ahead:

I know this is an older book, but I just read it, and I have some thoughts....

Jinx is being stalked...and it's "her fault". I probably should have stopped reading when I got to that part.
But I was curious, so I finished the book.

I'm mostly bothered by the fact that Jinx believes it's her own fault that she is being stalked, because she cast a love spell on a boy she had a crush on. He then becomes obsessive, controlling, and possessive. She realizes she doesn't like him and wants to break up, but he refuses to go away. All of this is chalked up as being her fault because of her love spell which was just way overpowered because she is such a strong witch. I really hated this messaging. Lots of people get into relationships thinking their new partner is the love of their life, only to have that person turn out to be controlling/abusive. We don't need books that are like well actually, maybe it was your fault, maybe you are to blame. Maybe you were too nice, too pretty, too magnetic. Maybe if you did things differently this wouldn't have happened.

I did love that the book addresses that it's really not ok to practice magic that affects other people's will/emotions, and that Jinx doesn't want to ever do that again. But it still felt like her ex took absolutely no blame for his actions.

I could write more, but that was the biggest issue I had with the story.
