Wonderful book! I had considered reading it and the series for a long time, then made the decision after an article in CrimeReads.com about female detectives in period settings. I am so glad I finally did, and am looking forward to continuing the series. I was especially enchanted with Maisie's very empathic method of appraising people and situations.

The pace of the book is intentionally slow, which fits the characters and time period, but certainly picks up to become more urgent when appropriate.

In addition to Maisie, the other characters are rich, such as Maurice, Billy, Maisie's father, and even Lady Rowan. The antagonist even has his own rich character and reasons, though on the dark side.

All of the references to World War I seemed very real, and the backstory was very intriguing and emotional.

I will be continuing the series with pleasure.
