Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas
3.0
when you combine penpal and bully tropes together, one problematic yet hot romance ensues. first of all, i love that the Misha and the Ryen started their relationship as penpals when they were young. it made their backstory believable. you root for them because they were so innocent and cute, BUT once the plot happens, it gets problematic. before you dive into this one, heed my warning because oooooohhh those red flags ain't playing. there's slut shaming, sexism, misogyny, dubious consent, and some other things you'd expect from a typical 2014-ish NA romance novels.
apparently, something happened between the two, they had a falling out, and Misha starts bullying Ryen. in case you're confused, Misha is a boy, Ryen is a girl (talk about originality, right?) they play tricks against each other, and at the same time the sexual tension between the two rises because both of them have porn star bodies. if there's one thing i like about Penelope Douglas, that's her ability to write compulsively readable books despite the trigger warnings. i felt guilty ignoring those issues i mentioned above because i had grown attached to the characters. for the record, Misha and Ryen are both bitches on their own. they're not whom you'd call 'good' people, but that's where the magic lies. you want to see them change and eventually fall in love. in hindsight, i couldn't remember if the character development was natural, but i do remember seeing them change for the better in the end. so i guess, i wouldn't be so nitpicky for that.
plus, this book was HOT HOT HOT!!!! the sex scenes were fucking amazing. maybe that's why i was blinded. HAHAHAHA. anyway, if you're into hot, bully romance, try this.
