This was my first time reading a book translated from French. The translation was definitely better than I expected (by Adam Thorpe), and I am happy I had a physical copy, as the weird intermingling of French and English made me distracted with the audiobook.
In my opinion, the plot itself is only secondary to the character building. I can understand why this is also considered a classic in English and why many years later it still can mesmerize readers.
This book does not get 5 stars I felt it dragged on towards the third quarter of it. Moreover, it would have been interesting to know where the 6 sections were divided in the original publication, as that would have created more suspense.
