The Colossus: And Other Poems by Sylvia Plath

3.0

Plath really said cottagecore but make it emo. I liked this collection but wished more of the poems centered around humans instead of animals. She's obviously a great writer all around but it's hard to feel her voice in the animal poems. Poems like Lorelei that center around a human protagonist embody the haunting/beautiful spirit we remember Plath for. I plan to read her works in release order, so I anticipate enjoying the later works more. As for this collection, however, my favourites were: Two Views of a Cadaver Room, The Faun, Lorelei, The Ghost’s Leavetaking, The Colossus, Sculptor, and The Stones. 3.5 stars
