Super Powereds: Year 1 by Drew Hayes

4.0

(Audiobook review) This book exceeded my expectations. I purchased it on sale thinking it would be mildly entertaining but instead found myself thoroughly engaged in the story. Happily, this is not just a rehash of other "school years" stories and has decent world-building.

Too many titles have characters who have endured suffering or tragedy and never quit whining about it and blaming it for their behavior. Instead, in Super Powereds, they recognize and "own" what they have endured, working hard to move beyond. They use it to motivate them to become stronger rather than using it as a crutch or excuse.

The ensemble of main characters are diverse, and while some at times act distastefully, they possess redeeming values that had me rooting for all. A tale is more realistic to me when it shows that most people have weaknesses and flaws in addition to being heroic.

I will be reading more titles in the series.
