The Liar's Dice by Jeannie Lin

4.0

This is a prequel novella to [b:The Hidden Moon|54876998|The Hidden Moon (The Pingkang Li Mysteries #3)|Jeannie Lin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1599102164l/54876998._SX50_.jpg|85633904] and we highly recommend that you read this before plunging into that one. It involves a tidy little murder mystery set in the Pingkang Li and two characters just getting to know each other. We've got Wei-wei, whose dissatisfaction with her cloistered life has her sneaking out to the pleasure quarter at night wearing her older brother's clothes. And we've got Gao, street criminal with his own sense of honor, who has a complicated relationship with Wei-wei's family.

It's a novella with a ton of chaste pining and there's no HEA because it's setting up for the next book. That said we both thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely recommend it for anyone who's been enjoying the series.
