The Shadow Cipher by Laura Ruby

3.0

I didn't like this as much as many of my favorite people seem to have liked it. I had a problem with the whole premise: "NYC is the beating heart of the universe and living elsewhere, especially NJ, is a cruel and unfair joke." Maybe because I grew up in Manhattan and I live in NJ. But anyway, NY provincialism is hard for me. And the book is practically dripping with it.

That having been said, I did enjoy Laura Ruby's grand vision of the Morningstarr's NY and their magical machines and the Cipher. It reminded me a little of Gregor the Overlander. I liked Theo, Tess, and Jaime. The book is an interesting blend of magic and SF, a kind of cyberpunk.
