The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail by Jason de Leon

emotional informative sad medium-paced

5.0

It shines a light on the heartbreaking reality of people who try to immigrate to America and the disgustingly inhumane way America forces them into the desert in hopes of them dying before they have to deal with them. If you’ve never thought about what that process of immigration is like for people who try to cross the border, I’d recommend reading this book and learning more about what’s happening. Especially with the recent election, I think it’s important that we become more informed about the issues of our country and how this “great land” of ours has chosen to deal with people searching for a better life. It’s heartbreaking the amount of lives lost to the desert and devastating to the people they leave behind who may never know what happened to their loved ones in the desert. We shouldn’t be complacent with this immigration process and these people deserve basic human kindness regardless of the legality of how they’re trying to come to America.
