Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe

challenging dark informative sad medium-paced

5.0

This is an incredible narrative account of three generations of the Sackler family who, through prodigious skill in marketing, insatiable greed, and amoral conduct, created OxyContin and contributed greatly to the ongoing American opioid crisis. Patrick Radden Keefe doggedly reported this story and left no stone unturned in his search for the truth about the Sacklers and Purdue Pharma. This book will leave you aghast and angry not only at the Sacklers, but at the countless people who enabled them and abetted their downright evil conduct. The work is masterfully written and eminently readable, even for someone who might have no prior knowledge of the Sacklers. I recommend this book without reservation to anyone.
