Playing Changes: Jazz for the New Century by Nate Chinen

5.0

Great book. If you bought into the BS from the Ken Burns series that jazz “died in the 70’s” or belongs in the conservatory, Nate Chinen will get you excited about all of the great music you’ve been missing. If you think you don’t like jazz but do like a lot of the genre-bending hip-hop and boundary-pushing music of the last few decades, Nate might convince you that a lot of this is actually ‘jazz’. And if you don’t like any or “all of that jazz’, well, on you go then. But this is a wondeful book by someone passionate and close to the living, breathing source of so much great, contemporary music. And if you stream your tunes, check out the online playlists for each chapter. But the book is highly recommended in any case.
