I really wanted to give this one five stars, but feel I can't, as it took me nearly two months to get through the first 100 pages. It really picks up speed after that, particularly into part two. Much of my problem lies in my lack-of familiarity with Russian lit and the Soviet-era. Reading the commentary in the back of most English editions fixes that. I really struggled with keeping the characters straight and thus felt no investment in them. Once we meet Margarita my attitude changed completely. I loved this book, and the ending really made up for the issues in the beginning. Absolutely loved the ending. Beautiful, unique, and compelling.
