American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
4.0
It's good shit let's be real. Lots of thoughts and yet I don't have much to say. This took me forever to finish, so my overall opinion is a bit scattered. The writing style rly works for me, and I think it is particularly suited for gore - no embellishments, no emphasis on any particular details, just plain descriptions of what is happening at the time, same exact tone as every other scene. I do have to mention A Glimpse of a Thursday Afternoon. Masterclass. Bret Easton Ellis just wanted to flex on us, and he did, and there's probably better chapters, but I remember reading that one and specifically thinking this. Other things that have stuck with me: the pacing is masterful, Bethany, you deserved better, the way we get short glimpses of Patrick Bateman but just never enough to actually have a round character, the Patty Winters show, I may or may not be into his brother, substance abuse and distorted perceptions of reality, his exercise regimen, distorted perception of romance vs his inability to be alone, obviously the gore, the racism/mysoginy/homophobia trifecta, and the fact that it's also funny in some places, and and and there's a lot, I could go on. It was hard to read through, and frankly it gets exhausting, but I'm probably gonna read it again. it's a good book lol
