This book is a perfect example of how much you can learn about history and culture just from reading books. While this is a fictional story, it's clear how much work the author put in from how much timeframe is covered (which she mentions in the acknowledgements). I knew little to nothing about the details regarding the Japanese occupation of Korea and the Pacific War during World War II, and I feel like I got more out of this book than all of my prior history courses combined.
