The 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith

My seven year old and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this after watching the Disney adaptation. It was fun to see the way Disney changed things and to read all the little details that had to be left out. For those of us with a feminist bent, there were a few cringe-worthy sentences, but my seven year old didn't pick them up, although I did have to explain about why it caused such a stir for one female character to appear in trousers. It would be an excellent opportunity to discuss, with an older child, how society has shifted since the writing of the book, and how it is the same in many ways.
