I appreciate graphic novels but never enjoy them as much as I think I will. I think I just never feel fully immersed in the story with how quickly everything moves. That was definitely not the case with this one. I think this short story approach totally worked for me. Even though they are just short snippets, you learn so much about the characters and their dynamics within the group and with other characters. The smallest details could either speak volumes or add some levity (loved Jordan’s “punk band you don’t know” shirt) to more serious situations.
I especially loved “Group Chat” and was smiling the whole time. The effortless conversation among friends and the charming ways the whole group was illustrated into Nisha’s story had me giggling. “The Bright Side” was very relatable, but I think it also highlighted how depression is viewed in the Black community, specifically. “La Benedición” broke my heart and “Ride or Die” was the perfect wrap-up that illustrated each character’s growth and the strength of their friend group. So incredibly heartwarming.
And such gorgeous, detailed artwork!! It’s really just beautiful to look at. Adored these characters and wouldn’t mind reading much more about them.
