Possession by A.S. Byatt
5.0
I have never read a novel written with such beautifully poetical language, and Byatt has such an incredible skill in doing so. The book itself is LONG, part of the reason being because of it's immense contextual worldbuilding. Byatt not only writes about Victorian poets Christabel LaMotte and Randolph Henry Ash from the contemporary perspective of researchers in the 1980s, but allows the readers of the novel itself to delve into the works of the poets too. This metafictional structure she creates as a writer is extraordinary, as is creates an entire dreamworld about literature that envelops everything needed when exploring the reader/writer perspective.
Not only is the structural elements of it fantastic, but the story is a gripping, mystery tale that takes readers not only across Europe but also through time in the most gracious ways. Would absolutely read again, and would recommend it to anyone who has interests in Victorian literature (especially poetry), mystery, and the whole idea of metafiction! ✨
