The Sword in the Stone by T.H. White

4.0

I enjoyed the anachronisms White brings to the story, Merlin aging backward and often speaking about modern events/items in the midst Medieval Europe. He tells Arthur's story a several centuries later than Malory, and inserts a great deal of humor and wisdom to the tale. I especially enjoyed that Arthur pulls the sword from the stone with the help/wisdom/strength of all the creatures he's interacted with throughout his adventures, rather than the traditional he-was-born-special Chosen One tale. This king becomes the chosen one by merit and slow progress as much as by birth.
