Love love LOVED this book omg. Firstly, loved that Zetian is much more morally grey than traditional female protagonists. Some people might not like the whole angry feminism take, but I found it to be extremely powerful and emotionally striking. Between the commentary on chronic pain, queerness, the patriarchy, and trauma—all through a sci-fi lens—I fell in love with this book and Xiran Jay Zhou’s writing. What a unique way of storytelling to touch on topics that are so easily relatable today in a modern society and world. Beautiful. Exhilarating. Impactful.
