On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.0

This book is part Stephen King's autobiography and part his approach and views on writing. In the early part of the book, he talks about his youth, his teen years, and his early adult years. He talks about how he met his wife, their early years together, and their three children. The book talks about what led him to write. He talks about his submittal of stories to various magazines. The book talks about writing Carrie and getting it published. He talks about how he writes. He talks about the various mental tools he uses in his writing. He offers suggestions to aspiring writers. The book details the accident where he was out walking and was hit by a car. It details his difficult recovery. Toward the end of the book, he lists books by decade (from the 1980's through the 2010's) that he liked a lot. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the details of Stephen King's early life and why he started writing. I also recommend it to anyone who wants some good instructions on how to approach writing.
