The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold

adventurous medium-paced

4.0

The start of this book was very strong. I read it for my Character with a Disability book bingo square and I appreciated that it actually dealt with Miles' disability and didn't just hand-wave it away.

Other pros:
-Clever protagonist who overcomes hardship and also has to check his bias a little.
-Teenagers who act maturely.
-The opening scene is quite good.
- The solutions to problems are clever and fun

Cons:
-It's very military sf. Which is not totally a con, except that I didn't realize how prominent it was going to be initially (looking at the cover, we can all agree this is probably my own fault). There's some more cultural/worldbuilding stuff I was more interested in. Which very well might be in the other books. There's a lot of them.
-There's so.many.names. They are long and people have multiple sometimes. I was bad at keeping people straight.
-There's a bit that deals very suddenly with a side character's past trauma and I’m not sure how I feel about how it was handled. Scratch that, I don't like how it was handled. This really brought the book down for me.
