Designing Your Work Life: How to Thrive and Change and Find Happiness at Work by Bill Burnett, Dave Evans
3.0
I really enjoyed “Designing your life” so I figured I’d enjoy this one more, but some things just didn’t sit that well with me... I found the chapter on how to “properly” quit your job really just too much, given that most people leave a job because they’re unhappy with something about their workplace. The idea of bending over backward for your workplace if you’re leaving seems a little over the top. No workplace would do that for an employee, but for some reason an employee should do that just to show them they’re a good sport?! I agree with leaving on good terms, but it’s got to go both ways.
I think ultimately this book kind of cemented to me that these guys are older and of a bit of a different time and mindset when it comes to work environments. And that’s fine, but I think they’re talking about a mindset that’s soon to be considered past, and we really need to adopt a mindset that’s focused more on the workers than the workplace for the future. Though maybe I’m just a bit too anti-corporation / anti-capitalism for this kind of book...
