this was my first time reading something by flannery o'connor and i went in not really knowing what to expect. most of the time, books of short stories are pretty difficult for me to get invested in but i found these stories really engaging. o'connor was a master of writing this incredibly textured prose that holds the characters at a distance while exploring their innermost thoughts and pathologies. it's incredible to me how distinct and interesting each of these stories feels despite dealing with much of the same thematic matter and settings.
