A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

The fact that I read this book in under 24 hours should tell you that it is a must read, but if that doesn’t sell you on it, the following might.

I’m a white girl living happily in my bubble, oblivious to the struggles muslim people have to face on a daily basis, so this book was eye-opening and heartbreaking and inspiring. Giving Shirin her voice and her story, even if it is just a book, is helping other muslim girls find their own. In the end it’s more than just a teenage love story, it’s about empowering women and educating people all around the world about muslim traditions without getting cought in the politics of it all.
Don’t get me wrong, i developed a huge crush on Ocean James but I like the story isn’t built around this relationship as if everything is perfect as long as they are together and imediately falls a part because they’re not.
The only reason why I didn’t give this book 5 stars was because I really wished Shirin had more of a voice in the comunity, she didn’t have to say it but i hoped we had known what her opinions were on certain topics instead of just telling everyone to fuck off.
