From This Wicked Patch of Dust by Sergio Troncoso

challenging emotional reflective medium-paced

2.25

This novel was released as part of the excellent Camino del Sol series from University of Arizona Press, but unfortunately I found it disappointing. The strongest positive in it, non-stereotyped LatinX characters, is really the least we can expect from a LatinX writer. The family saga plot rarely rises above telenovela level. The language often felt forced, with thesaurus sourced adjectives clogging the narrative flow. The dialogue was almost painful at times. I made it to the end, but was running on fumes when I got there.

There were strong reviews from writers I admire on the back cover, so maybe I just didn't get it or maybe I picked it up at the wrong time. But after reading this, it will be difficult for me to have another go at Troncoso's work.
