In her signature lyrical prose, Winman transports you into the lives of her characters - a world of vibrant colour and family, as well as crushing loneliness and loss. Ultimately this book is about first loves. Told from the perspectives of the two main characters, Ellis and Michael, it moves through their memories of each other and the complexities of their relationship, exploring friendship, hope, love, survival and finally the question of "what if?". It is impossible not to be moved or charmed by their story. What strikes me most about Tin Man is the way it explores grief. It is so well written, you feel the visceral pain and emotions alongside the characters. Moving, bittersweet and powerful.
