Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

This was an absolutely incredible start to this trilogy (series?)! I didn’t go in with any expectations because I somehow missed all the hype around this book… but oh boy did it deliver! This was a smiling at the pages kind of book.  I was absolutely hooked by the end of Chapter one when Trystan says “And if you must call me anything, ‘sir’ will do just fine” - AHHH.

I absolutely love Evie and Trystan (“the Villian”), and the fact that we get a dual POV makes it even better. Their view of each other, their chemistry and the slow burn tension between those two was so well written and didn’t take away from the overall plot.

I very much enjoyed the story, and I think the author did a great job of weaving in a bit of everyone’s backstory including some of the side characters like Tatiana, Clare, and Blade. I am sincerely hoping we get more of Kingsley in book 2 because he was a delight. I would also love for a bit more world building and explanation of the magic system.

I can honestly say I didn’t expect the plot twist and my heart was breaking for Evie. And the ending!! Let’s just say I’ll be reading book two ASAP.
