Brooke: Wagers Gone Awry by Collette Cameron
3.0
I almost DNFed this a few times. The inner thoughts of Heath, the MMC, were a little too of the time for me. It was gross. Modern women don’t read these books because they want the men to act like men of their time—aka thinking little of women and that it’s okay for old men to marry mousy young women.
There were other things along the way that annoyed me enough to make me roll my eyes and want to quit. But I kept going.
And once I got to the last quarter to a third, I was happy. It got so much better. It was lighter and cuter and sweeter. If the whole book had had the same air as the last quarter, I’d probably give this 4 stars. Even given the almost insta love and corniness.
I even kind of want to read the next one. But the cardinal sin of using marquis instead of marquess is a pet peeve of mine. Especially when there is no indication the lord is Scottish or French. An English marquess is typically not a marquis. As an avid regency romance reader, this drives me insane.
Overall, it’s mostly cute. I wish there was more showing and no telling. So much happens off the page with days skipped—a couple times after something slightly jaw dropping happens.
Read or don’t. Giving a neutral/like 3 stars.
