You know those books that you read where the whole time you’re thinking “omg I hope they make this into a movie, I have to see this play out on screen” while simultaneously thinking “omg I hope they don’t make this into a movie, they’ll never do it justice”? This was one of those books for me. I’m always nervous going into a book where I’ve seen predominantly glowing reviews, and at the start of this I was enjoying it but it seemed like a stock-standard YA fantasy. That all changed very quickly and I absolutely flew through this book.

Tracy Deonn’s writing is incredible and she tackles big issues like racism, sexism etc. head on. These themes form crucial plot points in this story and because she’s writing through her lived experience as a Black woman, they don’t feel tokenistic or out of place. Deonn captures emotion so beautifully in her words, particularly grief which is an ongoing theme throughout the book.

Overall I’m confident in saying this will be a top contender for best book of the year for me, and I think everyone who is even remotely interested in YA fantasy should experience it!
