Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

challenging sad medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated

I found this book hard to put a rating or judgement on - the writing is hugely evocative and masterful, but I found the “twist” of the writer obvious from the beginning and to be honest, found that the character Ugwu was very difficult to read
with his sexual desires so often lacking consent and then his eventual participation in a gang rape, I just could not get behind his redemption or lack of an effort for redemption.
. I would tell someone who asked that it is a really excellent book, but don’t think it will be one I revisit. War is very ugly
