A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll

5.0

This was an excellent book. It's a middle grade chapter book that I chose to read for a class in which I have to write a professional review. The book features a girl with autism (already I love this because it's not a popular character to feature) who wants her small Scottish village to construct a memorial plaque to commemorate women persecuted for being witches. Addie, the MC, talks about what it's like to be neurodivergent, what it's like to have to mask who she truly is to make herself more palatable for neurotypical people. Author Elle McNicoll is neurodivergent as well, and you can both see and feel her passion for equality and acceptance through Addie's voice. A heartwarming book that children should be required to read.
