This may be my favorite historical romance of 2024. I’ve read 44 books this year, and in that time l’ve never found a character as relatable as Lydia. In her moments of anxiety and self-doubt, I saw myself. As a fellow wallflower, reading her struggles about socializing and fitting in made me feel seen. Her story proves that despite your quirks, you’re worthy of being loved and accepted as you are, which is something I resonate with deeply.
The addition of mystery was a refreshing twist. Finding out that it’s inspired by actual historical events was an added bonus. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this to my romance reader/historical fiction friends. The anxious girly representation was spot on and the romance/spice did not disappoint. What more could you ask for?
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martins Press for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review!
