I really wanted to like this and though there were parts of it I did enjoy, I found myself just struggling to really stay connected to both the characters and the story itself.
I'm sure that when this book was released, vampires were much more interesting to be seen in this way but honestly now it reads like it's trying to be a retelling of Dracula but nothing makes it special or worth reading in it's own right when I could just go read Dracula (which I have).
A lot of my issue with this book was that just all of the characters seemed to blend together. None of them really seemed to have unique traits to me that made me care about them (other than Mark. I think King always does a fantastic job writing children in traumatic scenarios). I found Ben to just be really dull as a protagonist and honestly I did not buy that he cared about Susan at the end of it.
I will say, I did like the ending, since it became more a story about survival instead of triumph.
