American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

challenging dark funny slow-paced

4.5

A look inside of a world I would never want to encounter in real life. While I think it could have been 20-30 pages shorter (Once I got to the Cool Rat Trick™️ section I started thinking alright, alright I get it) the repetition mostly works as we witness Bateman’s collapse. Ellison really gets readers into a world of glamor - where names don’t matter and certainly not a few people disappearing. The absurdity of the comedic moments (and even the more gory scenes) is what really sells the novel to me and makes the critique of capitalism/consumerism more engaging than others I have read. I look forward to reading more of his work.
