Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

4.5

this is a remarkably honest depiction of addiction, but felt like a detached retelling. i was being shown events but would have found it much more insightful if i could have also heard the inner thoughts of agnes or shuggie. i think the closest the book got to this was with shugs perspective but that felt insignificant. slowly watching a family crumble due to addiction is heartbreaking, but i wasn’t able to connect with the characters as much without their inner dialogue.
