Homophobia and toxic masculinity. The writing itself is compelling but the story and the characters are awful. Twisted. Hateful.
I understood this to be a feminist classic. It sooo isn’t. Maybe the author was trying for feminism but this is not it.
I have just looked up the author and discovered she is violently homophobic. (Her husband threatened gay activists with a gun in the 80s and they both fled the country to avoid prosecution. She wrote a letter to the US President in support of her husband’s actions. It’s a wild story, look it up.)
Do not recommend.
