I really dislike Allanon, he's basically there to just explain the story in minute detail and it was tedious. He doesn't pull off mysterious at all. Honestly, much about this book was tedious, just about every the story focused on Wil, I gave up on reading and skipped over his terribly long inner monologues. I liked the characters a bit more than the first, but I'm not really convinced the writing got a lot better.
