The Death Cure by James Dashner

5.0

This book. My God. I really enjoyed it. I definitely enjoyed it in a different way to The Outlander, which was another recent 5 star review.

In ways this book was predictable, in ways it wasn't. I think I was so f*cked up from The Scorch Trials I didn't know what to believe. And I still haven't completely forgiven Teresa. I think, if things didn't happen the way they did, I could forgive and trust her again, but the novel honestly didn't give enough time to Teresa to do that.

I think what I mean by "predictable" is that nothing really surprised me. Not in a bad way, I wasn't bored or able to know what happened as if I had a time line in front of me. I just wasn't surprised at how things went. I knew Newt was going to die. I knew Teresa and Brenda both couldn't survive because this is NOT a love triangle series. (To be honest, I'm kind of glad it was Teresa who died, like I'm upset because I did like her and her character, but I think it made a neater ending for Thomas to end up with Brenda.)

The writing did make me really feel like it was the end of the human race. The book could have ended with everyone dying and I would have believed it. But at the same time, the ending was super believable. At first I was like, "dude, why the heck don't you want to help WICKED, they're just after a cure", but then when I saw how nuts the organisation was, I kind of thought, "just disappear with the Immunes and wait for the rest of the world to die out". It's kind of a cold and heartless way of thinking, but I am logical in the way I think of things. (I would have cut up Thomas's brain too if I thought it would bring a cure, except considering how the world was, it would almost be impossible to give the cure to people? I can't imagine Cranks lining up to have it injected.)

Overall, I'm really glad I read this series. I was feeling a bit "meh" when I read The Maze Runner. I liked it, but it didn't make me think it was amazing. Which may be more of a testament to how my reading tastes have matured, than the book. However, the last two were amazing books.

I am excited to read The Kill Order, but I also want another book to be after The Death Cure. I want to see how the civilization grows, and I also want to see Thomas happy. Married. With kids. Maybe even a small beer gut. He deserves that.

Also, one last note about why I'm so keen to read The Kill Order... WHY DIDN'T THOMAS WANT HIS MEMORIES BACK?!

haha :)

Time to read more of The Silver Brumby Centenary Edition before I plunge into my first "real" zombie book, Dry Trying by Nicholas Ryan. But, I think I'm going to class this one as a zombie novel. It was pretty heavy in spots and I'm super keen to watch The Scorch Trials movie and The Death Cure when it comes out. I'm interested to see how they take the adaptations.
