A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Stories by Charles Dickens

3.0

Some of the short stories would have got 5 stars from me on their own, and most would have earned at least 4. The two stories featuring Mrs. Lirriper were particular favourites of mine. They were funny, and though there was something of the caricature about the characters, they were all likeable and human (which was not always the case with some of the more over-done characters in other tales). Where the book fell down for me was the novella length stories. A lot of those failed to hold my interest, as I didn't end up caring much about the characters or what happened to them, and some of those stories felt like a chore to get through. Of the three tales written with Wilkie Collins, the first two I enjoyed, though the third didn't capture my attention. On the whole, the collection is a mixed bag, with some stories that really tried my patience (and reminded me that I have a lot of stories I want to read, and might be better off spending time one some other tale), but also some excellent stories.
