Head in the Clouds by Karen Witemeyer

3.0

My rating: 3.5 out of stars

This is my first Karen Witemeyer book. I decided to pick this one up because I was in the mood for something light and this book had so many good reviews by people I trust.
Though I didn't love it as much as I had hoped I would, I did still like it.

"Head in the Clouds," has a good cast of characters and an interesting premise.
Adelaide is a spunky and loyal person, who you can't help but love and root for. She embodies the "though she be but little she is fierce," archetype to a tee. I especially loved her scenes with her young student, Isabella.
Gideon is a charming and thoughtful character. His scenes with Adelaide, especially the one at the party, were pretty adorable.
Isabella is a fun character. She brings both levity and gravity to the story. I would love to see a book featuring her as a young adult!

The premise, while not that original, was interesting enough to keep my attention. There were a few plots twists that caught me by surprise. I think Karen Witemeyer did a good job with the pacing in the story, for the most part.
The only thing I didn't love, in regards to the pacing, was how quick the romance happened. The "love," word got thrown around a little too quickly, in my opinion. I had a feeling that this would be an instalove story, but I wasn't prepared for how quickly it would happen.

My other problem with this book was that it had a pretty graphic attempted se**al assault scene. Adelaide gets really beaten up and would have been r*ped if Gideon hadn't come to save her just in time.
I noticed several years ago that there was a trend in Christian fiction books for there to be a scene were a man forces himself on the heroine (it started around the time "Head in the Clouds was published). This is a trend I don't like. Thankfully it's one that's not been as popular in the last few years.
I really wish the author hadn't chose to put this scene in the book or had chosen to make it more brief. I think that that scene could be extremely triggering for anyone who has experienced any form of se*ual harrassment.

While I did have a couple of issues with this book, I did still have fun reading it. I think I probably will read more of Karen Witemeyer's books in the future.
