The Bone Code by Kathy Reichs

4.0

I won a copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaways and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’ve read many of Reichs’ Temperance Brennan books, but fell away from them around 10 years ago—there are so many, my life was busy, and I just fell behind. Entering back into Brennan’s world is easy, like slipping on an old coat, and I’m reminded of why this series both works and doesn’t. The books read fast, and are plotted well. They give just enough science to make you feel smart but not enough to be overwhelming, and they’re generally rooted in current events. Tempe is a pretty good main character; she’s smart without being a know-it-all, she’s brave and strong, sometimes to a fault, and she’s realistically faulted.

The bad: the books always rely on a series of wild coincidences that somehow only Tempe can make fall into place. There’s nearly always some physical danger that is so unlikely and miraculously always works out for the best.

This particular book centers on CRISPR, mRNA and a rapidly spreading disease. There’s murder and mayhem, cold cases, media panic, the whole works. It’s a good read, and is ideal for planes or the beach.
