This book always feels magical to me. There are so many aspects of the characters and the world that Aiden Thomas brings to life, with roots in Día de Los muertos and Latinx traditions that I always enjoy. I’ve read this book a few times and every time I find something else to appreciate from it.

There is such care taken in creating an authentic telling of the stories of queer, and specifically transgender youth in the Latinx community. I appreciated the nuanced  conversation around family, traditions, and acceptance; and the weaving  of different experiences into the story.
I love that it discussed Classism and stereotypes that lead people to make certain assumptions about kids based on dress, expression, etc.

When listening/reading this book, personally I sometimes felt thrown off by some phrasing and dialogue, but the creativity and magic  of the story by far make-up for these moments.

For the audio book, I was happy and excited to know that a Trans voice actor was chosen to read. The representation of the characters created by Aiden Thomas being followed up by very intentional choices for the audio book reader is something I greatly appreciate.
